Human-centred design (HCD) means designing products, services and brand experiences around the real needs, behaviours and feelings of the people who use them, rather than around internal assumptions. Brands built this way earn loyalty because customers feel understood. Here is how Zimbabwean businesses can apply it.
The core idea
Instead of asking “what do we want to sell?”, human-centred design asks “what does our customer struggle with, and how can we make their life easier?” The answers shape everything: your products, your website, your messaging and your customer service.
The human-centred design process
- Empathise: observe and talk to real customers. Visit them, watch how they use your product, read their WhatsApp messages and complaints.
- Define: summarise the real problem in their words, for example “I cannot get a quote without driving to town”.
- Ideate: brainstorm solutions with your team, without judging ideas too early.
- Prototype: build a simple version, such as a sketch, mock-up, test page or trial service.
- Test: put it in front of real customers, learn what works and improve.
How HCD builds a better brand
- Relevant products: you build what people actually need.
- Easier experiences: websites, forms and checkouts designed around user behaviour convert better.
- Authentic messaging: marketing that reflects customers’ real language and concerns resonates more.
- Loyalty: customers who feel heard become advocates.
Examples in a Zimbabwean context
- A school adds online fee payment and WhatsApp reminders after parents complain about queues.
- A retailer simplifies its online checkout to accept mobile money after seeing abandoned carts.
- A clinic redesigns its website around the three questions patients ask most: hours, location and services.
Start small
Talk to five customers this month. Ask what frustrates them about buying from you or from your competitors. Fix one thing. Repeat. Over time, these small improvements become a brand people trust. Learn more in our guide to creating buyer personas.
