Most business plans focus on the product and the big idea. The details that sink businesses are often the ones nobody planned for. Here are seven things entrepreneurs in Zimbabwe commonly overlook.
1. Cash flow, not just profit
A business can be profitable on paper and still run out of money if customers pay late or stock ties up cash. Forecast cash month by month and keep a reserve.
2. Registration, licences and tax
Company registration, ZIMRA tax obligations, municipal licences and sector permits all take time and money. Budget for them and get professional advice early.
3. Realistic pricing
Many new businesses underprice to win customers, then cannot cover costs. Include every cost, including your own time, currency movements and payment fees, plus a margin.
4. Who the customer really is
“Everyone” is not a target market. Define who will buy, why, how they pay and where they look for suppliers. Test demand before investing heavily.
5. An online presence from day one
Customers check businesses online before buying. A professional website, Google Business Profile and active social pages build trust and bring enquiries, often at lower cost than traditional advertising.
6. Contracts and agreements
Partnerships, supplier deals and client work need written agreements covering payment terms, responsibilities and what happens if things go wrong.
7. Contingency plans
Power cuts, internet outages, currency changes and supply delays are part of doing business in Zimbabwe. Plan for backup power, data backups, alternative suppliers and flexible payment options.
Review your plan regularly
A business plan is a living document. Revisit it every few months as you learn what works.
