Google Analytics Definitions: A Plain-English Guide for Zimbabwean Businesses

Google Analytics is free, powerful and confusing at first glance. If you run a website in Zimbabwe, understanding a handful of terms lets you see where your visitors come from, what they do and which marketing actually brings in customers. Here are the definitions that matter most in Google Analytics 4 (GA4).

Visitors and visits

  • Users: the number of distinct people (more precisely, devices or browsers) who visited your site.
  • New users: people visiting for the first time in the selected period.
  • Sessions: a group of interactions in one visit. One user can have several sessions.
  • Views: the number of pages or screens viewed, including repeat views.

Engagement

  • Engaged session: a visit that lasted more than about 10 seconds, viewed two or more pages, or triggered a conversion.
  • Engagement rate: the percentage of sessions that were engaged. It replaced the old “bounce rate” as the main quality signal.
  • Bounce rate: in GA4, the percentage of sessions that were not engaged.
  • Average engagement time: how long your site was actually in focus on the visitor’s screen.

Where visitors come from

  • Organic Search: unpaid visits from Google, Bing and other search engines.
  • Paid Search: visits from Google Ads.
  • Organic Social / Paid Social: visits from Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and X.
  • Direct: people who typed your address or whose source could not be identified (WhatsApp links often appear here).
  • Referral: clicks from other websites linking to you.
  • UTM parameters: tags added to a link to tell Analytics exactly which campaign sent the visitor. Use them on WhatsApp broadcasts and social posts.

Actions and results

  • Event: any interaction GA4 records, such as a page view, scroll, click, form submit or video play.
  • Key event (conversion): an event you mark as important, for example a quote request, WhatsApp click, phone click or purchase.
  • Conversion rate: the share of sessions or users that completed a key event.
  • Revenue: sales value recorded by an online shop with e-commerce tracking.

Audience

  • Demographics: the country, city, language, age and gender of users where available. Check how many visitors are actually in Zimbabwe.
  • Tech: devices, operating systems and browsers. Expect most Zimbabwean visitors on mobile.

Five reports to check every month

  1. Traffic acquisition: which channels bring visitors.
  2. Pages and screens: your most-viewed pages.
  3. Key events: enquiries and sales by channel.
  4. Landing pages: where visitors enter and how engaged they are.
  5. Demographics by city: are you reaching your target market?
