How to Accept EcoCash and Paynow Payments on Your Website

For most Zimbabwean shoppers, the easiest way to pay is the one already on their phone. If your website can only take card payments, or worse, asks customers to “send proof of payment on WhatsApp”, you are losing sales. This guide explains how to accept EcoCash and other local payment methods directly on your website.

Your options for accepting EcoCash online

1. Use a payment gateway such as Paynow

Paynow is a Zimbabwean payment gateway that lets a single website accept several payment methods through one integration, including EcoCash and other mobile money, and local and international cards, depending on what your merchant account is set up for. For most businesses this is the simplest and most practical route.

2. Integrate directly with a mobile money provider

Larger organisations sometimes integrate directly with a mobile network operator’s merchant API. This usually involves a longer approval process and more technical work, so it suits high-volume businesses with in-house developers.

3. Manual payment with confirmation

Showing a merchant code and asking customers to upload proof works for very small volumes, but it is slow, error-prone and easy for fraudsters to abuse. Treat it as a stopgap, not a solution.

What you need before you start

  • A registered business and supporting documents. Gateways typically require company registration documents, director IDs and proof of address as part of their verification process.
  • A bank account for settlements, in the currency you plan to accept.
  • A secure website with an SSL certificate (HTTPS).
  • Clear policies: published terms and conditions, refund and delivery policies, and contact details. Gateways often check these before approving you.

How the integration works

  1. Register as a merchant with the gateway and complete verification.
  2. Get your integration credentials, usually an integration ID and key.
  3. Connect your website. WooCommerce stores can typically use a gateway plugin; custom sites use the gateway’s API or SDK.
  4. Configure currencies and make sure prices display in the currency you will charge.
  5. Set up payment confirmation so orders update automatically when payment succeeds, using the gateway’s result or notification URL.
  6. Test thoroughly in test mode, then with small real transactions, before going live.

The checkout experience

For mobile money payments, the customer usually enters their phone number at checkout and receives a prompt on their phone to approve the payment with their PIN. Once approved, the website confirms the order. Make this flow clear on your checkout page, because many customers abandon payments simply because they did not notice the prompt.

Best practices

  • Offer more than one payment method: mobile money for local buyers, cards for the diaspora.
  • Show prices clearly, including any currency details and delivery fees.
  • Send instant confirmation by email and WhatsApp after payment.
  • Reconcile gateway reports with your orders weekly.
  • Keep your website and plugins updated. A hacked checkout page can redirect payments.
