How to Put Your Business on Google Maps in Zimbabwe

When people in Zimbabwe search for a business “near me”, Google shows a map with local listings before ordinary search results. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, a free tool that puts your business on Google Search and Google Maps. Here is how to set it up and make it work for you.

Why it matters

  • Customers can find your address, phone, WhatsApp, hours and website in one place.
  • You can appear in the map results for local searches, even without a big marketing budget.
  • Reviews on your profile build trust with new customers.
  • You get free insights: calls, direction requests and website clicks.

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

Go to Google Business Profile and sign in with a Google account you control, ideally a shared business account rather than a personal one. Search for your business; if it already exists, claim it. If not, create a new profile with your exact business name as it appears on your signage.

Step 2: Choose your category and location

  • Pick the most specific primary category, for example “Web designer”, “Hardware store” or “Dental clinic”.
  • Add your physical address if customers visit you. If you travel to customers, set a service area instead, such as Harare, Chitungwiza and Ruwa.
  • Place the map pin exactly on your premises. Zimbabwean addresses can be imprecise, so double-check the pin.

Step 3: Verify your business

Google needs to confirm that you are the real owner. Depending on your business and location, verification may be done by phone, email or a short video showing your premises, signage and proof that you manage the business. Follow the options Google offers you.

Step 4: Complete every section

  • Phone number and website.
  • Opening hours, including public holidays.
  • A detailed description of what you do and the areas you serve.
  • Services and products, with prices where possible.
  • Real photos: exterior, interior, team, products and completed work.

Step 5: Get reviews and reply to them

Ask satisfied customers for a review, share your review link on WhatsApp and receipts, and reply to every review politely. Never buy fake reviews; Google removes them and may suspend your profile.

Step 6: Keep it active

Post updates and offers, add new photos regularly, answer questions in the Q&A section and keep your hours accurate. An active profile signals to Google and customers that your business is open and reliable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding keywords to your business name, such as “ABC Plumbing Best Plumber Harare”. This can get your profile suspended.
  • Using a different name, address or phone number than on your website.
  • Creating duplicate profiles for the same location.

Connect it to a strong website

Your profile and your website work together: Google uses your website to understand your business, and customers check it before they call. Read our guide to local SEO in Zimbabwe, or let our team handle your SEO and Google Business Profile.
